Title: Planning on purchasing a 5 mnth old puppy? Help!
Post by: bflover on January 02, 2012, 12:14:32 PM
Hi! My name is Mon, I had previous post of me looking for breeders and my previous experience did not work well.
Now, I got in contact with Terrell of Bichon of parmele and said that she has a 5 month old baby boy. I know and have read that most puppies are taken younger than 3 months. I was wondering if taking him at 5 months would be too old. How about the name, can I still change it? I know that she is lovely breeder and have talked to her myself but I ran out of questions to ask. I love the idea of getting a bichon from a reputable breeder and, I also like the idea that he is older now. I am just not sure if this would be a good idea. Please help!

Five months is not "too old" but you may want to ask why the little fella wasn't adopted out with the rest of the litter. As far as changing his name, it would be easiest to choose something that has a similar sound to whatever they are calling him now.

Bichons of Parmele advertises in the back of Dog Fancy. I always flip to the back to look at the little Bichon photo because I like the haircut of the one they picture.

Good luck!

The breeder had said something about her being sick last month and that she usually gives her puppy out at 4 months old and this lil fella just turned 5 months old. I guess I should clarify it out.

5 months is still very young and he will be lovely. Its easy to change cats names and I'm sure dogs will be the same.He will be well on his way to toilet training and vaccinated too.

Why not go and meet him and see if you bond?

Terrell is a group member and Andrea knows her and has one of her bichons.Alison

My Mattie was five months old when I got her.  She was a returned puppy and had been "trained" harshly.  Consequently it took me months to earn her trust.  But it did happen and at age 18 months she was competing in agility.  She is an awesome little girl and I wouldn't trade her for any other puppy!  Five months is certainly not too old to establish a bond and form a positive relationship.   I did not change Mattie's name (except the spelling from Maddy to Mattie).  I liked the name and she did look at me when I said it.  She had too many other issues to change her name.  I'm sure Terrell can give you advice on this.  She is a well known breeder and considered to produce quality, well adjusted pups.   I say "go for it"!

Thanks. I'm starting to look at the more positive things of getting an older puppy. He'll be more mature i guess! hehe

Hmm, what questions should I ask her though?

Definitely you want a health record including tests for genetic imperfections like heart murmur and structural problems.  You want to see and interact with the puppy to see if he is the type of personality you want.  Some people like a clingy, always in your lap bichon.  Others want a more confident, laid back pup.  Explain your lifestyle to Terrell.  See if she thinks this pup will fit the bill based on his personality.  That's what good breeders do.  You want to know what the puppy has been fed and if he is crate trained.  Is he used to being in a house or has he been kept in a kennel.  Make a list of questions before you contact Terrell again.  Be ready to jot down the answers so you don't forget.

Hello Mon.  Terrell is a good friend of mine and both of my furbabies came from her.  I have played with the puppy you are referring to and he is a sweet, very calm little boy.

Kelly, the dog that is pictured in Dog Fancy, is Roxie or at least it has been for the past several months.

Andrea, is this the boy you pictured on one of your play dates at Terrell's? If so he is ADORABLE, the one I WANT!!!! Those eyes  But I can't have another.  :cry1:
Mon, I would pick up that pup in a heartbeat.  :nodding: Five months is a fine age.
I don't know why Terrell has older puppies for sale, but I would think that the  :usflag: market may be flooded with substandard breeders where people can get pups cheaper and younger?

I'm glad Andrea saw this thread, as I was going to say she knows Terrell well, and has her fluffs from Terrell; Terrell is also a member of this forum, though I don't know how often she checks in.

Don't let that sway your decision, you do still need to do your homework and ask questions, and Terrell will appreciate that you do!

Here is a link to the Bichon Information Station:
http://www.bichonfriseusa.com/

Scroll down, watching the left most column for BREEDERS.  You can read through the essays on there to get some back ground, and write down things you want to check on.  The links for the CERF and OFA testing are broken (I keep writing to tell them, and I even GIVE them the proper links, but it never gets fixed!).  Those are the tests done on the parents for eyes and hips genetics issues.

On that same line as BREEDERS, in the right most column is RESCUE, but the first topic is about picking a puppy.  Read that bit too!

The more info you have, the better prepared you will be.  Good luck!

Bichns are very adaptable - 3 of mine are rescues who were much older and they just fitted in without any problem.
Good luck

Getting a 5 month old bichon should not post a problem at all.  Getting it straight from the breeder is a +++++.  Terrell is a member of this forum and Andrea (who has 2 of her bichons) has already posted - so I say - Go for it girl.  :cheer:

Mon, I totally agree with Sandie in that you need to ask questions and be completely satisified with your choice.  I can only speak for my experiences with my 2 but know that her furbabies are great dogs.

I got Riley at 4 months old and it was a great age, he was playful still but more confident to leave his litter mates.  Riley's breeder will not sell her pups until at least 12 weeks old, she says they are just too little.  Good luck, I bet you bring him home.

Xixi is my first bichon but I had other doggies all different ages and they do adapt. Also I change the name on one of them and had no problem at all I guess they do respond to tone of voice.

Pixel who is a new rescue brought into my home is an undeterminate age I think she could be at least 4. She has already bonded with me in one week to the point where she is too possessive not with Chich but with visitors etc something we are working on. I think 5 months is a great age to get a pup and the pup will have been taught doggie manners by his mum. Thats a huge bonus!

Wish that  I did not have to work and I could meet you at Terrell's.  I would love to meet you - depending on what time you will be there and if you would not mind my coming.  Puppies are the best and I am so excited for you.

Yay congratulations on getting a Bichon puppy (soon!)  :cheer:
5 months is not old at all. He is still a baby!  You can easily change his name and he will get used to his new name quickly.  A well-bred Bichon puppy adjusts to a new home quickly and very well.

The advice  Sandie and Mary-Ellen have given you is excellent!  Make sure the parents have had their knees, hips, heart, and eyes tested and clear of any genetic diseases. Not every breeder tests for all that but it is all important.

Congrats - I hope you have as much fun with a new puppy as we have. Between her blitzes and getting in everything that is not tied down is keeping us slim and trim.  Enjoy.

Mon, happy to hear you are enjoying your new boy. It is very common for breeders to keep  certain pups in their litter until 5-6 mo. for show purposes. By this I mean they watch them carefully to see if they may be show prospect. If not, then they will find them good homes. I do not know if this was your case, but again this is common. Coming from a reputable breeder you will have a wonderful dog. Again, congrat's. Traci and my crew ( Bevo , Chanel, Chloe , Sugar, & Fancy).
