Well, I'm a court reporter by trade. I used to work in court and do depositions. After about five years of working with attorneys,

, I went to work for a company in Pittsburgh that does national captioning for TV. As a stenocaptioner, I use my reporting skill and steno machine to caption live shows. This is all done through modems, so I'm able to work at home now, which is great.
So tonight I captioned an NCAA basketball game on ESPN and a local news in NYC. I hear the shows at the same time you do, thus the delay in captions on your TV.
There are captioners who do "offline" work, or shows that we can get ahead of time. Those are just quick typists who are great with grammar, spelling, current events etc. As far as I know, those are on-site jobs.
Anyhoo, I've been reporting/captioning 15 years and most of the time really love it.
