I just started a similar thread for male Bichon mommies to share their anxieties (those who've not gone through it), and their experiences (those who's gone through it) .... SHARED EXPERIENCES ON NEUTERING.? This thread shall be for female Bichon mommies flowers.

As Lauren put it so succinctly, I want this thread to be about feelings, your actual experience, and not the usual why-you-should-do-it spiel blush.

Okay bichon lovers, I made the appointment today for the "operation". I consider myself somewhat intelligent.. even if I cannot spell! Yes I have read the articles, yes I have considered the options. On one level I know it is the right thing to do and on another I feel very uncomfortable making this decision for some(one) else (?) BUT now I want to hear the truth from the ones who have lived through it.....

I want to know all of your experiences with spaying?neutering. How long was your pup in the hospital? How was he/she when they got home? Did anyone wait until after heat? Were there any side effects? Is anyone not sure they made the right decision and WHY? I am looking for a REAL discussion of the issue (I can read facts....tell me feelings) ....SO DON'T HOLD BACK.....I'm waiting....

So any female Bichon mommies who have sent their darlings for spaying or who are thinking of doing it, but just afraid to go through with it, share your experience(s) & anxieties here original

I had Cssie spayed about 6-7 weeks ago and she is doing great, right back to her old self!! Clap  I was very nervous and worried about the whole ordeal.  The morning I had to drop her at the vets office I got my best friend to go with us for support, and I cried when I had to leave her crybaby.  But I knew that it was one of the best things I could ever do for her.  I worried about her the whole time she was there and when I finally got to pick her up that afternoon, I cried again crybaby. It took about 3-4 days for her to get back to somewhat normal behavior and now she is just like she was before--playful and mischeivious!  She forgot (Ithink) all about the experience within days and I'm glad that it is over with. sweatdrop  I did not wait until after her first heat because I felt like that wasn't necessary because her vet told me that he had not encountered any problems (that could be directly attributed to early spaying) so I decided to trust him and go ahead and do it.  Also, with waiting until they go into heat you run the risk of an unwanted pregnancy, she is always kept inside but unexpected things do happen,( thats why they're called accidents blush. )  So, long story short, it is over and done with and we don't have to worry about it anymore, and yes, I feel like it was worth the worry and tears. flowers

Adora Belle Abby

« Reply #2 on: November 05, 2005, 12:03:07 PM »

Here is my story on spaying Abby. I have also read articles. But, I have not yet, until above, read stories from people about it. Abby's vet said I should have her spayed about 6 months and that it would not make any difference if she had a cycle. Now she is almost a year old and still cannot make up my mind when I want to go through the ordeal. My baby is so little I hate to see her go through surgery. It would probably hurt me worse than it would her. She still hasn't had a heat cycle so I am considering to have it soon. Anyone else out there with stories?

My Sweet Jessie and Sammy!

« Reply #3 on: November 05, 2005, 02:03:48 PM »

I had Jessie spayed when she was just five months old. I was so upset when I left her at the vets office that I took the day off of work and moped around all day!!!  crybaby They vet told me I could call and check on her throughout the day and believe me, I did just that!!! I must have called so many times that, rather than keep her overnight like they originally insisted, they let me pick her up that same afternoon before they closed. I was so relieved to have her back.  Clap Jessie was in pain for a few days but bounced back very fast!!! I am still nervous and protective over her when it comes to anything that requires her to be put under anesthesia (ex: teeth cleaning), but I understand things need to be done. This is one of those difficult things we have to face as puppy moms, and it's never easy!!!

Although very RARE I had my 7 month old spayed and the due to a very rare abonormality in the development of her uterus, the vet was only able to locate one ovary resulting in her going into heat (she is now one year old). I am now agonizing over the decision to put her through a second spay procedure.... My point is I do not for one second regret having her initially spayed but just wanted to let you know that things can (like everything else) happen. Again, a second spaying would resolve the heat issue I just need to weigh the risks of a second operation to that of the possibility of the development of breast cancer. Personally I am leaning toward leaving her alone.

Awe...Thank you everyone for your support. Happy to say the operation was a success. However Shiloh is feeling very uncomftable. The doctor did give her Meds. for me to use but I don't think its working. I am using a onesie to keep her from licking the incinsion. She does try to lick it but glad to say she can't seem to get to it. I'm glad she doesn't seem to mind the onesie on her. When Ted and I first took her home she would cry with every movement but within a few hours she still is hurting but her crying stopped. I'm looking forward to when she is feeling like herself again. She is definetly getting alot of TLC here. original

I love my Sofia!

« Reply #14 on: November 19, 2005, 02:54:39 PM »

Sofia was spayed on October 12 at 6 months of age. She spent 2 nights at the hospital. When she came home everything was fine at first. However this was about the time that we had a bad rainstorm in our area and it poured for a whole week straight. It made it very difficult for Sofia who is only trained to go "outside to go to the bathroom". Everytime she went outside she got all wet even though she had a coat. I don't know if this was the reason or not but she got an infection on her stiches. The vet gave her an antibiotic injection, recommended Otimax ointment to be applied twice a day on the infected area and put a tube on her neck to prevent her from licking it. I also bought her a few newborn babies t-shirts (the ones with the snaps at the legs) to protect the area of the surgery. I only snapped one end so that she could go to the bathroom. The vet said my idea was great. I only wish I had thought of it sooner (before the infection). Now a month later she is fully recovered and the surgery is a thing of the past. I hope this can help others that are going through the same thing we did. original
