Oh and after doing much research, I have decided to switch him to Nature's Variety - Instinct! I think it will be good for him

could be they let him go to his kennel wet, does the fur look like it is tightly curled at all? or because of the surgery did not rinse him well enough?

Uh, I am also thinking that he peed in the kennel and got himself dirty. Because he does look quite dirty and some hair in the back is REALLY matted. So yeah, he was probably wet. Not sure from what exactly - but he is definitely bothered by it. He can't get a bath until 2 weeks later though, and I have cut the really bad mats in his back. I need to get him to the groomer as soon as his stitches are removed in 2 weeks!

do you not have any waterless shampoo at home? We have to do this for shows alot use the waterless shampoo stand him on a towel and use a sipper bottle with warm water (16 oz) and just /2 tsp of white vinager rinse, and than one more time and that way you will not get it on the stitches , than blot with a towel and than with a paper towel, after that cool blow dry while you brush.

this way he will not be wet under the dog just on the outside even if you get it damp a little, just blot well...........that way you do not have to cut the mats out................gads zooks did they not tell you that after this surgery about half of the dogs lose their bladder hold? because the nightnight anaesthetic they use to put them to sleep temporarily shuts down the holding muscles and so when the anaesthetic gets to the bladder , well everything kinda goes limp........

I have some that is spray on and wet....I do know they make a powder form too....Does he smell like pee/urine? How bad is he matted? if it is just on the butt area....just cut it off and ease the stress for you both....if on the groin too....cut it off.....if it is just tangles and on his back.....use a little spray in conditioner and gently comb through.....could do the same on matts on the back....just remember he is sore under neath and on the back side.....just be gentle....I do not suggest the powder if he just had surgery....could cause problems with the incision. Just keep his stiches dry.....I had to bathe Jake when he had his surgery.....he got in the mud....I just used water and made sure I got him patted gently dry on the stitches.

call your pet store and ask if they carry a waterless shampoo, if they do i use puffy dog, or natures specialties both are easy to use, spray on the area and than even though it is rinseless, use asipper bottle to rinse with a touch of white vinager. pat dry and use a paper towel when done. if you get stiches wet, just pat dry with paper towel, do not use cotton ball as they leaves strands.

yeah doesnt happen with all but a big percentage. So when any of mine get put to sleep for anything I sleep them in a kennel not on my bed and on a waterproof sheet of on a incontinent underpad for the first 2 days.
jessie had this for his OFA hip xray 2 weeks ago and sure enough not the next day but the day after he woke up and could not hold and just flooded like a girl dog.........I knew it was not his fault and when i saw him squat like a girl i knew it was the drugs doing the temporarily upsetting his hold.

Ninja had an accident yesterday too! He hasn't had an accident for 2 months and it was the first time. That explains it!

Diane,
You are teaching us all kinds of things! Thanks!
I, too, sometimes use the waterless shampoo. I just bought some in a spray bottle to carry in the car. At home, I have used the regular waterless shampoo that I bought at the drug store. It is used for hair washing for humans who might be in the hospital or unable to shampoo hair. It works wonderfully. I have some of the towels that absorb water ( not regular bath towels- don't know what to call them, you see them advertised in pet catalogs and on TV- they are generally yellow and they really absorb water ) and I used them to gently dry the hair. I use it mostly on his face and it keeps me from having to get his body wet after a face wash.
Seems like it would be so easy for the vets to give us this kind of info and it makes perfect sense that there would be an effect on the bladder muscles.
I do hope that Ninja is less itchy and doing better. I think he will do well on the grainless Nature"s Variety kibble.

yes and yes and yes, you got that right Sandra, the towels are called sham wow, the big difference in the sham wow and the absorber is the "absorber never needs washing it rinses and dries out, you still have to wash the sham wow, but they both have their place and I use both..........
